A work in progress (ongoing) initially begun in 2004, consisting of the Declaration of Free Territory and the actual outlining of the Free Territory in public spaces. Within its borders, any activity or object was declared a work of art, thus any passerby automatically becoming an artist even for a few seconds. The territories were temporary and their short lived history documented, each photograph becoming part of the following exhibit, and so on. Over 30 territories across Europe and the US were established during a period of ten years.
2009
The Free Territory executed during the group exhibition The World Within (Museum of the City of Skopje, 2009) was outlined in the main square of the capitol where the right-wing government had already given the Orthodox Church permission to build a church. The decision was opposed by students and activists whose protests were brutally silenced by the police and right-wing followers. This specific territory (nicknamed The Yellow Cross) was short lived: fearing further demonstrations, the city authorities censored the work the same day by ordering for it to be covered with bitumen, thus transforming it into The Black Cross. The erasing of the Territory by the censors was declared as a work of art.
